Several years ago, I heard some friends talking about portable applications in their USB’s and sth. However I wasn’t that foolish and also remember old-school times, when I had computer with CD-ROM and pirated-software from Russia, where it existed in early 90′s :D

But giving a reason why I’m posting here, I want to write about website called PortableApps.com. You can download software from here free, no fees, easy orientated design and stable uptime – you can access there any time. The only disadvantage (maybe only for me) is that there are no zipped versions to download, because it’s more comfortable for me :) But anyway, installer looks good, comfortable, doesn’t need any permissions (yes, you can install on any Win computer, even in library).

In these times, when you are studying at college you need to access your favorite applications via your memdrive. It’s an advantage, that my Greenwich Community College has lot of PCs and pretty good network (thanks to stable CISCO routers), so I don’t need to bring my short-lasting laptop – it’s really nice from college side, especially when you sold your computer to get some money (yes, also laptops sucks, I’m planning to buy a PC in those days – Linux will show up again!).

And for final, my frequently used apps:

Libre Office Portable – nice office suite witch has a compatibility working with Microsoft Office documents, of course there are lot of functions so it’s very flexible and what’s most important – free and open source!

Opera Portable – closed source Internet browser which is my favorite, supports new standard web pages, languages like HTML5 and CSS3 and of course it has synchronization, Unite (you can create file sharing server on your PC), very fast and comfortable browser – you even don’t need mouse to work with it!.

Notepad++ Portable – Open Source text editor for various languages like C, C++, HTML, ASP, Java, Pascal, CSS and more. Moreover it has tabs so you don’t need to dump your task-bar, you will see your code clearly and comfortably, try it and you won’t lose it!

Gimp Portable – Open Source and widely popular image manipulation program, I use to create designs for web pages, edit photos, create some pictures and everything what I want. It’s simple, lot’s of functions and really nice app! I recommend it for everyone.

FileFileZilla Portable – Open Source File Transfer Protocol and more client, it has putty support, so you can easily access to any ftp server. In addition it has nice and customizing interface, tabs and everything what you need.

Pidgin Portable – it’s really nice and simple to use instant messaging client with support of various of protocols like MSN, ICQ, AIM, XMPP, facebook and more. There are various plugins for services like twitter, skype and more. Visit official website to find out more. Text your friends from anywhere!

This is currently what I’ve got on my thumb drive, in future I’m planning to try more software. Take your external drives and prepare for all situations.
